Synopsis
The Solitary Summer is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Elizabeth von Arnim. The book is narrated in the form of a diary and centers around Elizabeth as she again tries to find solace in her garden during a lonely summer. The book is also notable for Elizabeth referring to her husband as the Man of Wrath. Elizabeth von Arnim was a prominent British writer in the early 20th century. Born in Australia, von Arnim and her family moved to England when she was three years old. Elizabeth was married twice but both were very unhappy marriages which led to her concentrating more on writing.
