This Archive collects Spirit sections originally published between January 6, 1946 and June 30, 1946, following Will Eisner’s honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. Synopsis

A fascinating mixture of light hearted drama and action-packed adventure, THE SPIRIT ARCHIVES VOL. 12 continues the tale of the mysterious masked crime fighter and his mission to aid the weak and the oppressed. Reprinting the weekly newspaper strips that were originally published from January 6, 1946 to June 30, 1946, this hardcover edition tells the story of Denny Clot, a young criminologist who miraculously returns from the dead to become the enigmatic hero known only as the Spirit.

The Washington Post

… Eisner's formal experiments opened up new territory for American comics. The title page of each story, in particular, is a little wonder of design -- the Spirit's name might be spelled out by scraps of paper drifting over an industrial zone, a set of lipstick prints or the ripples in a whirlpool. Eisner discarded realism in favor of hyperexpressive body language and loose, rubbery linework. He played with wide-open spaces on the page, wordless sequences and elaborate framing devices for stories. From a 21st-century perspective, these stories are snapshots of post-war American culture, trying to make sense of its own absurdities. β€” Douglas Wolk
