Children's Literature - Tina Dybvik

Flaring reds and yellows set the tone for this volume about Earth's nearest star. Four distinct sections introduce and expand basic concepts about solar activity. The first discusses facts on the sun's formation, estimated age, and relative position within the galaxy and solar system. The second provides more details about its composition, including the core, radioactive zones and convective zones. The third section focuses on the "Effects of the Sun" both on Earth and for space technology. The fourth, directed to the "Young Astronomer," emphasizes safety through indirect observation. Each short chapter poses a question, which is followed by two or three queries that aim to further explore the issue in a style that demonstrates the scientific method. As a result, the presentation is engagingly non-linear and the information is easy to absorb in colorful two-page spreads. A "Database" of statistics concludes the text, which is followed by a glossary, an index, and a list of Internet-based resources. One of four titles in the "Exploring Our Solar System" series, this provides a clear description of advanced ideas and terms. Reviewer: Tina Dybvik
