Overview

Adventurer, soldier, and scholar, T.E. Lawrence made his mark as "Lawrence of Arabia." When the British intelligence officer join the Arabs' fight for independence from Turkish domination, Lawrence embarked on a struggle that secured his status as a fixture of popular culture. A complex, brilliant writer in his own right, T.E. Lawrence wrote two autobiographies, Seven Pillars of Wisdom and The Mint. Contemporary critics are unequivocal in their praise of Lawrence's work. Lawrence recounted the details of his dramatic life in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, offering his perspective on his Arabian exploits, and The Mint contains his later experiences serving under an assumed name as a Royal Air Force recruit. In this study, Stephen Tabachnick offers a distinct view of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and The Mint. Lawrence is worth reading both for the fantastic story that he had to tell and for the outstanding way in which he told it. Tabachnick subjects these autobiographies to a formal literary analysis, exploring Lawrence's life in his books, how he appears in them as a character, and how successful as art his characterization is.

Analyzes Lawrence's two autobiographies, Seven Pillars of Wisdom and The Mint, exploring Lawrence's life in his books, how he appears in them as a character, and how successful as art his characterization is. Tabachnick (English, U. of Oklahoma) considers Lawrence's modern military ability as it relates to his classical heroic vision in Seven Pillars of Wisdom. He examines the clash between romanticized high ideals and bitter modern experience, as well as what Lawrence's work seemed to say about love, death, heroism, and cross-culture conflict.
