This intricately illustrated look at the history of the Temple in Jerusalem will give readers a great deal to examine and digest. Each attractive double-page spread is accompanied by illustrated sidebars relating the history of the period. Beginning with Abraham's journey from Ur to Canaan, this book covers the history of the Jewish people up to 1976, when old buildings around the Western Wall were demolished in order to create an open square for worship. Without bias, this book explains the significance of the Temple to Jewish worship. The ancient Temple sacrifices are explained at length. Even the priestly vestments are labeled. Captioned diagrams detail the construction of Solomon's Temple and its enlargement under King Herod. The Temple's destruction in 70 A.D. was followed in the 7th century by the construction of the Dome of the Rock, an Islamic mosque, on the very same spot. During the Crusades, the Dome of the Rock was converted into a Christian church. Readers who take the time to read every caption will close this book with a greater understanding of why Jerusalem is revered by three major faiths. A time line, glossary, and index are provided. However, a bibliography of sources is missing. 2002, Peter Bedrick Books/McGraw-Hill, $18.95. Ages 9 to 15. Reviewer:Jackie Hechtkopf
