Children's Literature

"Hook 'em 'horns!" is the well-known battle cry of this college football franchise. The addition of the University of Texas to "Team Spirit-College Football" is a logical choice for the series. A member of the Big 12 Conference, the Longhorns have had their share of the limelight. In this book young readers will be introduced to the history of the team, from their earliest days through the significant players, their stadium, their uniforms and on to their huge mascot, Bevo. The timeline provides a chronological overview of the team, but the chapters themselves do not follow the time sequence. Because the book focuses solely on the college players there is no reference to Longhorn players who may have influenced the NFL. And, the fact that there are two separate chapters of player lists is a bit awkward. The information itself is rich in detail and presented with bold vocabulary words. There are also sidebars that give important general information about college football and the teams that play it. Middle-school Longhorn fans may want to add this book to their collection of sports memorabilia and schools in the Big 12 states will appreciate having the college football series in their libraries.
