Children's Literature -
One in the "Great Disasters, Reforms and Ramifications" series, this book features an introduction by Jill McCaffrey, national chairperson of the Armed Forces Emergency Services of the American Red Cross. According to Ms. McCaffrey, its purpose is to educate and inform, not only about a specific disaster, but to tell about resultant reforms or legislation enacted to prevent or minimize the effects of future disasters. The story follows the Titanic from its design to that final fateful night when it hit an iceberg. The use of written records, eyewitness accounts and contemporary research based on the recently found remains of the Titanic are used to bring its story vividly to life. Some discussion on ways the disaster could have been lessened or avoided as well as reforms which have resulted in safer ocean travel will give kids food for thought. Period black-and-white photographs lend authenticity to the account of the Titanic as well as the short discussion about other more recent ocean disasters. While a chronology of events, suggestions for further reading, and an index are included, the lack of a bibliography is a minus. 2001, Chelsea House Publishers, Ages 10 to Adult, $19.95. Gr 6-8-An engaging book on a popular subject. All factual information is presented in a straightforward, understandable text, and Harmon includes numerous recorded quotes to dramatize the account. A simple chart shows the disparity between the loss of life on board; readers may be surprised to learn that while 130 passengers traveling first class died, 536 perished in third class. One sidebar highlights the ship's captain, Edward J. Smith, and another describes other famous shipwrecks. The author also provides a lengthy further reading list and two chronologies detailing the Titanic's history and its maiden voyage. Clear black-and-white reproductions and archival photos appear throughout.-Shanla Brookshire, Lovett Memorial Library, Pampa, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
