Children's Literature

Part of the "Events That Shaped America" series, this book describes the building of the railroad, the planning of the large project, and the impact that a "coast to coast" railroad had on America. The text is clear, with difficult words highlighted and explained in a glossary. The authors also include an index, a time line, a list of further information, and a list of things to "think about and do." These activities would be good for school writing projects, but not for a "hands on" activity. The book also has a large amount of illustrations and maps to help readers understand more about the railroad and what happened in 1869. This is a good resource for young readers who are doing school reports on the development of the railroad in the United States. 2004, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-Five chapters in each slim book present the developments leading up to and including the featured event. For example, Trail of Tears discusses the arrival of Europeans and the U.S. determination to acquire new territory that led to the forcible removal of Native peoples from their land. Triangle Shirtwaist begins with descriptions of the crowded and poor working conditions of factories that led to the tragic fire. All the books provide information on the impact of the event and/or discuss its place in our history such as the reforms that resulted from the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the eventual obsolescence of the steam engine and the replacement of the Transcontinental Railroad with other means of transport. Succinctly written texts, interspersed with copious black-and-white and color photos, drawings, reproductions, maps, and newspaper illustrations, will keep interest piqued. Each book includes boxed period quotes by participants in or witnesses to the events. While most libraries will already have information on these topics, these accessible titles will appeal to reluctant readers and be useful for reports.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
