Beginning with some background on Brown and the political situation of the day, the book tells of the passion this man had for abolishing slavery. His upbringing and religious beliefs and how they contributed to his radical actions are explored. After this introduction, the story of the crime and trial unfolds. Not only will readers gain an understanding of Brown's beliefs and actions, but they will also receive a broad history lesson on the late 1800s in America. Sidebars with information on American slavery, a history of Harpers Ferry, and the witnesses to the hanging, etc., appear throughout the book.
