Overview

For time immemorial, the tiger has been an object of awe, reverence, and superstition. Its strength and ferocity are proverbial, its presence overpowering. Today, the tiger faces extinction. In the last century, it has dwindled from a population of 100,000 to barely 6,000. Out of 8 subspecies, 3 have become extinct in the last 60 years. Now, The Vanishing Tiger offers a rare look at the history and way of life of an endangered animal. Featuring 200 color photos, this is an essential book for anyone concerned about the future of our planet’s wildlife. Vivek R. Sinha is a former Secretary to the Government of India. Now a professional photographer, he and his wife Arati have spent the last two decades photographing the tiger in the wild.

The world of the tiger in India is brought to life through the photographs in this book. The photographer and author has traveled around the world photographing animals. The text includes information on why the tiger is vanishing, folklore and myths about the tiger, its habitat, hunting abilities and behavior. The author shows through maps where the tiger used to live and how much smaller that area is now and why. The text is interspersed with pictures illustrating the text. The plight of tigers in several Asian countries is explained. However, not only tigers are highlighted in this book. Other predators are also presented in photographs and in the text. Such predators included are leopards, wild dogs, Indian wolves, striped hyenas, jackals, Indian foxes, jungle cats, marsh crocodiles, Indian pythons, ruddy mongoose, and vultures. Prey species such as many types of deer are introduced. All of these animals are part of the food chain and are integral to the lives of each other. Different tiger reserves in India are described along with how many tigers they hold. Information on touring and taking pictures in the wildlife reserves is included in the last section. Recommended for anyone interested in learning more about tigers and their habitats. Includes fabulous pictures useful for teachers who want to show students details of various animals in their habitats. 2003, Salamander Books, Ages adult.
