Children's Literature
One wants to like this bookit so clearly has its heart in the right place. The storyline follows a second-grade girl whose grandfather comes to her class for Veteran's Day. Unfortunately, the book cannot quite decide what it is really about. Is it about overcoming fears? Is it about honoring veterans? Is it about narcolepsy? Is it about being embarrassed by relatives who act strangely? There is just no clear thematic focus or emotional center. The illustrations do not help much. While expressive, they are awkward and simply not very attractive. All in all, it is unlikely that many young readers will find this book compelling. Reviewer: Barbara Carroll Roberts
