While not precisely an ancient civilization, the Vikings are among the most mysterious recent civilizations that have disappeared as a unique culture. Most of the information that has been gathered about the Vikings comes from discovering their graves, and the historical information provided by the countries they raided. Despite this lack of solid information, the accumulated facts reveal a proud, intelligent people and a rich culture. Historians have been able to deduce how Vikings created things and what their daily life may have been like. This brief glance at the Vikings shows the importance they placed on shipbuilding and sailing, as well as how they lived and went about their daily life. While the author provides interesting facts about the Vikings, this should in no way be considered an adequate first history of the Vikings. Full color illustrations of Viking ruins, as well as museum exhibits and recreations appear throughout the text. Provided at the end of the text are several Viking facts as well as a glossary, an index, and Internet sites for additional sources of information.
