Overview

The Llano Estacado, due to its aridity and drastic weather changes, was one of the last areas of Texas to have permanent settlement. It took a special people to hold and conquer this land. The fictional characters in this story were such as they lived their era. Every era presented its problems, hardships and victories. Every era, as we realize and learn what that period faced, brings into focus there was a power that guided them, gave them the strength and the fortitude to prevail. The prairie stores these experiences. Some will say they can hear and understand when the breezes whisper across the prairie. Each of us, if nothing else, must listen, remember, and be thankful for those who came and made their mark. The hardships they faced seemed insurmountable at times. Disease, accidents, weather and failure loomed as a constant reminder. Death and broken families were accepted as a part of this challenge. All of this left the legacy of a culture and lifestyle that will endure and inspire . . . for as long as there is a whispering prairie.
