Children's Literature

One hundred years ago, on a lonely beach in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers forever changed the world. Their powered flying machine was the first to be controlled by an on-board pilot. The Wright Brothers story has humble beginnings, from a failed attempt at a printing shop, to a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, to years of experimentation with gliders and airplanes. Orville and Wilbur's strengths and talents effectively played off one another, creating an inventing team that overcame one technical obstacle after another. When the brothers applied for a U.S. patent for their flying machine, it was denied on the grounds that such a contraption was a scientific impossibility. Eventually the brothers did earn fame and fortune, but ironically it was initially other countries—namely France and Germany—who recognized and appreciated the ramifications of what the brothers had achieved. Part of World Almanac Library's imminently readable "Trailblazers of the Modern World" series, a timeline, glossary, list of further resources, and index are included. 2004, World Almanac Library, Ages 10 to 14.
