In 1902 while on a hunting trip in Mississippi, President Theodore Roosevelt was given the opportunity to shoot an old captive bear. Roosevelt refused to do so and the story of the outdoorsman's compassion became a national news story. A famous cartoon was published across the nation depicting Roosevelt's act of kindness. A sharp-witted toy manufacturer renamed one of its stuffed animal products a "teddy bear" hence coining a term still commonly used across the land. Of course, Theodore Roosevelt was famous for far more than this loveable moniker. A sickly youth who became a rugged lover of wilderness, Theodore Roosevelt remains one of the most capable men to hold the office of president. Roosevelt was a social reformer, environmentalist, and strong-minded leader. During his two terms in office, President Roosevelt fought against corruption, battled monopolies, and set aside enormous areas as national parks. This dynamic person is the subject of Donald Schueler's biographical work. Using a well constructed style Schueler ably tells the story of Teddy Roosevelt's life. As in other books in the "MyReportLinks.com Presidents" series the author includes a wealth of Internet sources for further study. Readers of this book will learn a great deal about one of the more dynamic figures in American history. All in all, this is an informative and engaging biography that focuses in on a national leader who combined energy, intelligence, and principles to become one of the most successful American presidents. 2002, Enslow, Romaneck
