Carol Ren Kneisl

This fourth edition of a mental health nursing book is written at the practical nurse level and focuses on behaviors rather than diagnoses. The previous edition was published in 1993. The authors do not specify their purpose for writing the book. However, it can be assumed to be to update LPN/LVN students in mental health/psychiatric problems. The audience is LPN/LVN students learning mental health/psychiatric nursing concepts. This book is not as user-friendly in appearance as some others. Greater use of subheads to break up lengthy blocks of text would be very helpful and make topics easier to find. Key Points at the end of each chapter are useful. Post-tests are well done and appropriate for this level. The focus on dealing with behaviors, as opposed to psychiatric diagnoses, seems very appropriate for the LPN/LVN reader. However, the discussion of psychiatric diagnostic categories in Chapter 5 is confusing and appears inconsistent with the chapter title. There is no discussion at all of childhood and adolescent disorders and no discussion of sleep disorder (something the practical nurse in any healthcare setting needs to know). I cannot recommend this book for purchase.
