Julius P.A. Dewald

This is a useful and much needed book on current theoretical and clinical aspects on the effects of low intensity lasers on biological tissues. The purpose is to provide the clinician, student, or researcher with an useful overview of the current research and accompanying hypotheses of the physiological effects of low intensity lasers. As such, it provides the clinician with possible treatment parameters while at the same time illustrating the significant shortcomings in our understanding of the effect of low intensity laser on living tissues, which is essential for those contemplating research in this area. The book is targeted for clinicians associated with the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, such as physicians, therapists, and students in this area as well as scientists with interests in the biological effects of low intensity lasers. This book includes many useful features, such as summary tables providing an overview of studies performed in areas such as wound healing and pain relief, illustrations to clarify more theoretical aspects related to laser physics, bioenergetics and tissue optics, and illustrations as well as pictures pertaining to the clinical usage of low intensity lasers. An additional helpful feature for the reader is the summary statement provided at the end of each chapter. This is a very useful book that has been designed to fill a significant gap in the available literature on low intensity lasers in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. It combines our current understanding of the effect of low intensity lasers on biological tissues and the emerging implications for clinical usage. At the same time it fosters interests in muchneeded further research in this new and exciting field.
