Reviewer:Jason B Hand, MS(University of Oregon)
Description:This is an easy-to-understand, systematic approach to understanding and implementing the various methods of massage in the athletic setting. It moves through basic theories, anatomy, and physiology involved in massage principles, while providing examples of numerous techniques.
Purpose:The purpose is to support and encourage the development of advanced massage skills of sports healthcare professionals. Due to the increased awareness of the potential impact of various manual therapy techniques and the growing number of sports medicine teams with massage therapist collaboration, the overall goal of this book is very relevant. By addressing the most important topics that surround therapeutic massage, the author is able to fulfill the objective of this book.
Audience:It is targeted at sports healthcare professionals, specifically certified athletic trainers, as well as athletic training students. As a recently certified athletic trainer, the author uses her extensive background and relevant medical terminology and integrates this information with young professionals in mind while providing enough detail for more experienced clinicians.
Features:This book covers the ins and outs of the foundations of therapeutic massage for neuromuscular, myofascial, and lymphatic purposes. The author discusses everything from the physiological behaviors to clinical evaluation and implementation. The book is a nice combination of broad principles and specific techniques in an attempt to share the author's knowledge and the current literature with a wide spectrum of practicing ATCs. The information is presented in an organized, simple, and concise manner making it easy to follow and process. The numerous charts, pictures, glossaries, appendixes, tests, and first-hand experience all help to create an easy understanding of how to use therapeutic massage as part of a holistic treatment philosophy.
Assessment:As a young professional in the field of athletic training, I found this to be an excellent tool for introducing new information while reinforcing and building on principles learned during undergraduate curriculum.
