Carlee Hallman - Children's Literature
Besides a bat, this poor old lady swallows an owl, a cat, a ghost, a goblin, and more. The pictures are colorful and scary with a lot of energy. This story is a take-off on "There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly," which has rhyme, rhythm, and a clever punch line. This version with its uneven meter, uncertain rhyme scheme, and punch line without a good reason, fails to match the original story. Although it is stated that "a Cartwheel Book should stand alone as a valid piece of children's literature," in my opinion, this book misses the mark. 2002, Cartwheel Books/Scholastic, Ages 4 to 7.
