Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-A simply written rhyming text follows a young girl from the moment she is gently wakened by her mother until she kneels beside her bed to give thanks for the day. With the reverence of a modest prayer, brief sentences reveal the complexities of everyday activities. "These hands/can reach./Can stretch./Can teach....These hands/can pray./Can clap./Can play./Can sow the/seeds/for a brighter/day." Whether making chalk drawings on the sidewalk or gently pressing her lips to her pregnant mother's belly, this African-American child's confidence and joy are captured by Collier's deeply hued, evocative collages. While the verse is occasionally forced and the illustrations don't always match the action of the text, the overall result is effective and pleasing.-Alicia Eames, New York City Public Schools Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Price pens an ode to the potential in a small child's handsβ€”hands that can create, fly a kite, hold open the pages of a book; they "sow the seeds for a brighter day." Lulled by its poetic rhythms, children will appreciate the uplifting message of this text that puts them in charge of their destinies. These hands and the hands of every child who reads this book will undoubtedly shape the future, building relationships and stronger communities. Collier's bold collage art captures the loving relationship of a family working together and supporting one another throughout the day. The simple, staccato sentences and scenes will work well at story hours, as listeners envision the possibilities of the tender, hopeful narrative. (Picture book. 3-7)
