In PW 's words, ``Rockwell's familiar animals briskly propel the vehicles, toys and tools; each confetti-colored spread is crammed with action. An amiable compendium of information for young readers.'' Ages 3-6. (Feb.)School Library Journal
PreS Rockwell's purported intent, to create a look-it-up book for very small children who are just beginning to sort out and classify their world, is ably realized in Things That Go. The vivid, colorful illustrations are vintage Rockwell, as is the use of animal characters. A table of contents shows things that go. . . : on the road, to work, in the country, in the house. Each section is a two-page spread with approximately a dozen pictures that depict appropriate ``things.'' Rockwell's selections reveal her characteristic humor: both balloons and rockets are things that go in the air; balls, lawn mowers, and pogo sticks are things that go in the yard. Her illustrations also convey humor: a rabbit on snowshoes, a moose on cross-country skis. This is a book that children will look at over and over again, and one that will create many opportunities for discussion as small children recognize and add Things That Go to Rockwell's list.
