Through this study, Jorda (English studies, Universitat Jaume I, Castello, Spain) attempts to create a bridge between two applied linguistics subfieldsinterlanguage pragmatics and third language acquisition studies. Following discussion of the theoretical issuesthird language acquisition, pragmatic competence and foreign language learning, the sociolinguistic aspects of language learning and use in the Valencian communitythe author presents findings from a study of 160 female students at Universitat Jaume I conducted in 2000, analyzing the role of pragmatic instruction on pragmatic competence, the effects of proficiency level and task on pragmatic production, and the role of bilingualism in pragmatic awareness.
