Overview

Edwin Forbe's Thirty Years After is surely one of the most remarkable firsthand accounts of the Civil War ever published. Originally issued in 1890--thus the title--the lavish, oversized book is both a pictorial and a written record of the daily experience of war. It contains hundreds of etchings of Civil War scenes along with twenty equestrian portraits of Union generals such as Grant, Sherman, McClellan, and Custer, reproduced from oil paintings.

Editorials

Library Journal

In this facsimile of the rare 1890 edition, Forbes provides illustrated reminiscences of his two years traveling with the Army of the Potomac. In 1962, at the age of only 23, he was hired by the popular Frank Leslie's Newspaper to provide the paper with sketches of the conflict in Virginia. A keen observer, Forbes focused less on battle scenes and more on the life of the common soldier, with drawings showing hospitals, engineering feats, and languid camp life. Illustrated with 189 black-and-white etchings, this will serve as a good companion to Leslie's Illustrated Civil War (Univ. of Mississippi, 1992). Highly recommended for Civil War collections.-- Joseph Hewgley, Nashville P.L.
