Overview

Thomas Schtte has frequently cast himself into the role of a maverick--remained remote from the work of his artistic mentor, distanced himself from the statements of each ephemeral Zeitgeist and increasingly contradicted his own positions--and in so doing has become one of the most influential artists of his generation. Shifting from text to image to object to book, his work juxtaposes biographical moments with contemporary events, oscillates between the aspiration to shape the public reception of architecture and monumental sculpture and the conjunctive of model-maker, and projects avant-garde ideas onto traditional forms of art. With meticulous rigor, Ulrich Loock has observed the evolution of Schtte's output over the past 25 years. Underpinning his lucid overview is a series of intensive discussions between the author and artist on the genesis and history of particular works. This well-designed book is the most comprehensive monograph of the artist's work to date, and provides profound insight into Schtte's work through detailed discussions of the pieces.

About the Author, Thomas Schutte, Friedrich Christian Flick Collection

Thomas Schutte was born in Oldenburg, Germany, in 1954. Between 1973 and 1982, he studied fine art at the Dusseldorf Art Academy with Fritz Schwegler and Gerhard Richter. Since his first solo shows in 1979, Schutte has exhibited widely in Europe and throughout the world. A large exhibition of his work recently traveled to London, Tilburg, and Oporto. Among numerous group shows, he participated in Documentas 8, 9, and 10 (1987, 1992, and 1997), and the Munster Sculpture projects of both 1987 and 1997.

Brandon LaBelle is a sound artist and writer from Los Angeles. Working in the fields of sound, performance, and installation art since 1992, LaBelle aims to draw attention to the dynamics of sound as it is found within spaces and objects, public events and interactions, language and the body. Through a performative interaction with objects, found sound, and minimal electronics, the work draws attention to the quality and nature of what is already there through an emphasis on and displacement of listening and interaction, as a technological and architectural glitch. LaBelle's interest in site-specificity reflects a desire to consider the relationships and tensions between art and a broader social environment. His work has been featured in Bitstreams at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in Amplitude of Chance at Kawasaki City Museum Japan, at the 9th International Symposium of Electronic Arts in Liverpool and Manchester, Sampling Rage Festival in Berlin, the ICA London, Experimental Intermedia in New York, the Arizona State University Museum, and as part of Sound as Media at ICC in Tokyo. His work has been released on the SELEKTION , FringesRecordings , Ground Fault , and La Bruit Secret labels.
