Taking the position that strong families are necessary for a stable society, the authors stress discipline, sharing, and consistency in this prescription for raising children. They point out that every institution must have a legal system, an economy, and traditions that it can adhere to, with the family being no exception. Reading in turns along with their five children, the Eyres share how their family uses these three categories to build strong and lasting bonds. Refreshing as this message is, with its emphasis on values and stability, it strongly promotes the role of Christianity in family traditions, something that may not suit all listeners. Also, despite assertions to the contrary, the Eyre family seems unrealistically happy and functional; perhaps this is because they do not have to deal with the unemployment, alternative lifestyles, single parenting, and poverty that confront many of today's families.
