This work achieves the rare distinction of delving, in telling fashion, into the mores of early 19th-century England while simultaneously being a first-rate thriller. The Thurtell-Hunt murder case was a cause celebre which titillated all of England, and its background, dramatis personae, and general circumstances tell us much about the age. This book is more than a detailed study of an isolated occurrence; it is, as the subtitle correctly suggests, truly a mirror on the age in which it transpired.
