Overview

Many different styles are revealed through tilework, from the mellow Dutch Delftware depicted in paintings by Pieter de Hooch, to the lively, inventive decoration adopted by Duncan Grant at his Charleston farmhouse. The influence of the Islamic world is shown in the tiles of Moorish Spain and the Victorian period, while the Gothic, and its revival in the nineteenth century, the Renaissance and Modernism are all represented. The book is illustrated with an array of stunning pictures, which include not only individual tiles but also patterned and pictorial tile panels and items such as ceramic stoves as well as authentic interiors and elements of exterior decoration. Paintings and drawings are also featured to set the tiles in context.

Library Journal

Produced in Europe in large quantities since the Middle Ages, ceramic tiles are one of the most versatile and enduring of earthenware media. Tile types, uses, production techniques, influences, and aesthetics are concisely presented in this exceptional historical survey. Graves (curator, Victoria and Albert) shows examples from 12th-century England and France, Moorish Spain, Renaissance Italy, and the Netherlands, concluding with British tile industry revivals in the late 19th century. Loaded with fascinating details, the text flows well and will attract a wide range of readers. Illustrations and photos demonstrate amazing tile motifs, colors, glazes, floor and wall paneling, and decorative as well as architectural and other functional uses. Special sections highlight medieval and delftware factories, the Alhambra, tile stoves, ornamental tile dairies (popular on great estates in the 18th and 19th centuries), Islamic influences, and inlaid tile manufacture. An admirable bibliography notes both monographs and periodical articles. Highly recommended for academic and most public libraries, which may also wish to consider Tony Herbert and Kathryn Huggins's The Decorative Tile in Architecture and Interiors.-Russell T. Clement, Northwestern Univ. Lib., Evanston, IL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
