Gr 6 Up-This series entry focuses on how the entertainer turned himself around after serving a jail term for selling cocaine and went on to be the star of the popular and long-running sitcom Home Improvement. Wukovits is evenhanded in dealing with Allen's problems and presents him as a sympathetic character. Stylistically, the book reads like a press release, which is not surprising given the fact that the author cites sources such as Time and People. Black-and-white photographs appear throughout. Especially striking is Allen's mug shot following his 1978 arrest. However, a number of the pictures are only tangentially related to the subject, such as the sort of toy soldiers he played with as a child and the actor Tom Hanks in the movie Punchline. The book includes a useful list of agencies that help people deal with substance abuse. While the basic facts of the actor's story will be familiar to most followers of popular culture, this book will be useful for reports.-Tim Wadham, Dallas Public Library, TXBook Details
