Children's Literature - Heather Christensen

In the sixth book of the "Timberwolves" series, Tom and his father attend the annual fathers-versus-sons hockey game. The winner will receive the coveted Wassabee trophy, but newcomer Tom soon learns from his friends that it takes more than good hockey playing to win this trophy. The game is simply the culminating event of a weekend outing full of practical jokes and a "what goes on the road, stays on the road" philosophy. In other words, the only thing the Timberwolves' mothers are to know about the trip is who won the game. The boys and fathers try their hardest to outdo each other, but in the end, it is the mothers who have the last laugh. There are plenty of laughs in this fast-paced story of male bonding. Brouwer uses cliffhanger chapter endings to encourage new readers to keep reading. Black-and-white drawings highlight the zany goings-on. Although fans of this series will not want to miss any installment, the story stands on its own and can be enjoyed by those who have not read previous books in the series. Short, funny, and action-packed, this is the perfect book for reluctant readers. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
