Synopsis

A biography of the band leader and recording artist who grew up in Spanish Harlem and gained worldwide popularity as the "King of Latin Music."

School Library Journal

Gr 5-6-These books focus on the professional lives of these individuals and offer little about their childhoods. Ch vez devoted himself to bettering the working conditions of migrant farmers. Baca is known for her colorful murals, especially The Great Wall of Los Angeles. She has brought troubled teens together to create their own wall paintings. Puente, known as "The King of the Mambo," was a consummate percussionist. Sidebars, oftentimes full page, devoted to other people or to events in history, add information but break up the flow of the texts, as do the randomly placed black-and-white and color photos. Some highlight the person's life, while others help to explain historical events. The glossaries have simply stated, to-the-point definitions, which will be helpful for students doing reports. These titles will not get much use except for research assignments.-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
