Describes some acts of bravery and heroism performed by Air Force personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq.Editorials
Children's Literature -
The United States Air Force remains one of the most powerful military forces in the world. American air power has been a mighty factor in military planning since World War II. At present, American pilots patrol air space in many parts of the world. With such a large footprint in the world scene it is hardly surprising that men and women serving in this service branch have been called upon to make great sacrifices. Every time a jet fighter, long range bomber, or military helicopter takes off there is significant risk involved. In time of war these inherent risks are multiplied in manifold ways by the hostile actions of enemies. In this title from the illustrated "Acts of Courage: Inside America's Military" series youngsters are provided a compelling glimpse of the courage that some airmen and women portray in time of war. In one instance the featured hero rescued men, women, and children from the Pentagon when it was struck by a jet plane during the terrible attacks of 9/11. In another instance the courageous actions of an Air Force medic who sacrificed his life to care for wounded Special Forces troops in a rescue operation is recounted. In another story a female pilot demonstrates fortitude and bravery by navigating the return flight of her A-10 "Warthog" despite severe damage from enemy rockets and automatic weapons. Each of these stories is true and thereby even more amazing than fiction. In presenting these tales of bravery Aronin has offered her readers food for thought about such things as sacrifice, courage, and a dedication to others over ourselves. Reviewer: Greg M.
