Synopsis
Describes acts of bravery and heroism performed by Army personnel in the current wars of the U.S.Editorials
Children's Literature -
Every war has its share of heroes. The wars on terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq following the unprecedented attacks of September11, 2001 are no exception. Today's heroes can be found in every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. This particular volume tells young readers about some of our country's current Army heroes. Written at a third grade reading level, guided reading level O, brief paragraphs coupled with non-gratuitous action shots of soldiers in the Afghanistan and Iraq war zones, help tell the stories of these men and women, who put themselves in harm's way to save others. Readers will learn about Army Ranger Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry who, despite being shot in both legs, grabbed a live grenade and threw it away from his teammates. They will read about Army Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller, who lost his life leading insurgents away from his unit, saving twenty men. Army medic, Private Monica Brown is another hero. She helped saved the lives of two critically injured soldiers whose convoy was attached by hidden explosives and enemy fighters. These are just of few of the heroes readers will meet on the pages of this book. Part of the "Acts of Courage: Inside America's Military" five-title series, the title includes a table of contents, glossary, bibliography, and index. Fred Pushies, a U.S. Special Operations Forces Advisor, served as an expert consultant to the book. Reviewer: Kris SauerBook Details
