Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck

Michael Murphy was a Navy SEAL serving in Afghanistan when, in June of 2005, he was tested in a way that few people are called upon to be tested. While serving in a mission aimed against the Taliban, Murphy and his comrades were ambushed. Within minutes a number of American casualties were the result of the fierce fire brought down upon them by their foes. Seeing several of his comrades wounded Murphy attempted to use his cell phone to call in an air strike and rescue force. Realizing that he could get no reception where he was hidden, Murphy rose up and strode over to higher ground where he could make contact with other American forces. Murphy was struck by a bullet in the back, dropped his phone, but remarkably picked it up and completed his call. Sadly, Murphy died of his wounds and never saw the relief arrive that saved many of his comrades. It is courage such as Michael Murphy demonstrated in the mountainous topography of Afghanistan that is featured in this title from the illustrated "Acts of Courage: Inside America's Military" series. As is the case with other books in this fine series, readers are offered a combination of the actual stories of bravery in the field that armed service personnel demonstrate with numerous, color photographs. This combination results in a slim book that tells stories worthy of being read in a way that will capture the attention of readers and teach them something about the sacrifices others make on their behalf.
