Tony Hawk is a matter-of-fact book that includes all the details of Hawk's rise to fame, from the early days when skateboarding was uncool, through countless hours of practice, and finally to professional success. The book is made readable by Hawk's accounts of his difficulties at school, his feelings of being an outsider as he was growing up, and his love and admiration for his father, who died in 1995. For those who really want to emulate the man, Hawk provides an appendix of his "top tens," including "Ten Hardest Tricks to Learn," "Ten Favorite CDs," and "Ten Favorite Types of Food." Although the photos are black and white, they complement the text. An attractive design adds to the cool factor. This title will be an excellent choice for otherwise reluctant readers. Photos.
