Overview
The contents of this little book are the fruits of an invitation from the Committee on Social Thought of the University of Chicago, who asked me to deliver the Sara Halle Schaffner Lectures at the University in 1976. When extending their invitation, the Committee gave me a wide discretion as to the topics I might take for my lectures, stipulating only that my theme should be one that lay within the field indicated by the title Social Thought.Book Details
