Purpose: The purpose is to give guidance on gathering and interpreting data as well as on the tools and techniques to use at various stages in improving performance. These goals are important for every organization in order to gather accurate data and then turn it into useful information that can be acted on.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is written for healthcare professionals at various levels of the organization. Those who are striving to improve their organization's performance, as well as anyone in an organization who wants a better understanding of the process, would benefit from this book.
Features: It defines performance improvement and provides some basic information on national groups that deal with performance measures. It gives guidance on what to measure, from prioritization through setting up performance improvement teams. Chapters two and three, "Navigating the World of Performance Measurement" and "Measuring Up with the Right Tools," are particularly well done.
Assessment: This will be very useful for healthcare professionals who want to understand the broad aspects of performance improvement as well as the specifics of data gathering and interpretation.
