Overview

Amanda Hocking is an indie publishing sensation whose self-published novels have sold millions of copies all over the world.  Step into the world of the Trylle, and prepare to be enchanted….

When Wendy Everly first discovers the truth about herself—that she’s a changeling switched at birth—she knows her life will never be the same. Now she’s about to learn that there’s more to the story…

She shares a closer connection to her Vittra rivals than she ever imagined—and they’ll stop at nothing to lure her to their side. With the threat of war looming, her only hope of saving the Trylle is to master her magical powers—and marry an equally powerful royal. But that means walking away from Finn, her handsome bodyguard who’s strictly off limits…and Loki, a Vittra prince with whom she shares a growing attraction.

Torn between her heart and her people, between love and duty, Wendy must decide her fate. If she makes the wrong choice, she could lose everything, and everybody, she’s ever wanted…in both worlds.

As a special gift to readers, this book contains a new, never-before-published bonus story, “One Day, Three Ways,” set in the magical world of the Trylle.

VOYA - Heather Christensen

Hocking's second book in her Trylle series continues the story of Wendy, a changeling who just recently discovered her true heritage as a troll (or Trylle) princess. Shortly after attempting to return to her human home, an enemy troll clan known as the Vittra kidnaps Wendy and her human host brother, Matt. While a prisoner of the Vittra, Wendy meets her troll father and an intriguing—and super hot—Vittra named Loki, who, for reasons yet unknown, helps her escape. Finally accepting her true nature, Wendy returns to Foerning, the Trylle capital (with Matt in tow), where she resumes princess training. Though gaining strength as she learns to control her supernatural powers, Wendy remains a weak, ineffectual character surrounded by controlling male figures. Her romantic interests are guided solely by physical attraction, rather than how she is treated or intellectual compatibility, which leads to predictable, one-dimensional relationships. A fast-paced plot and intrigue between the warring troll factions drives the story, and fans of the first book will want to see how it all fits together. Reviewer: Heather Christensen

Kirkus Reviews

The second installment of the Trylle trilogy picks up right where the first (Switched, 2012) left off, with 17-year-old Wendy Everly returning home to her "host brother" after disappearing without a trace almost a month prior. Before Matt has time to digest the fact that his little sister is actually a changeling Trylle princess with "mild superpowers," they are kidnapped, and Wendy finds herself once again at the center of an "epic troll battle." Fans of the series will enjoy watching on as Wendy continues to wrestle with issues of belonging, particularly when both the Trylle and the Vittra claim her as their chosen one. Though she is stronger in this installment and gradually learning to harness and control her powers, there is still plenty Wendy must overcome. Not only are there big-time mommy/daddy issues to resolve, but also matters of the heart that will keep both Wendy and readers happily entertained. While the writing certainly lacks the depth and polish it takes to win major literary awards, there is no denying that Hocking knows how to tell a good story and keep readers coming back for more. More is exactly what they will be looking for once they've turned the last page. (Paranormal romance. 14 & up)

Gr 9 Up—This follow-up to Switched (St. Martin's, 2012) finds Wendy more confused than ever. Just weeks earlier, she discovered she's a changeling and Princess of the Trylle, a humanlike race of trolls. Shortly after returning to her (human) brother, Matt, Wendy is kidnapped by Vittra trackers and learns that their king is her father. Wendy is a powerful troll with an important decision: Will she rule the Vittra and trust her father to follow through on his promise for peace between the warring races? Or will she claim her birthright and fight for what she knows is right? The world Hocking has built is detailed and beautiful. Wendy is a likable, well-rounded heroine. However, neither the Vittra threat nor the teen's romance with Finn is convincing. Throughout this engrossing sequel, readers learn more about the Trylle and Vittra and of the origins of their war. Enough background exists that this novel can act as a stand-alone. Give it to fans of P.C. Cast and Kelley Armstrong.—Alissa J. LeMerise, Oxford Public Library, MI

Fiktshun Reviews Reviews

Yet again, Amanda Hocking has created a unique tale in this genre that has become extremely crowded with stories from both indie and veteran authors. Torn is fast-paced and will engage you from the very first page. And while this is a sequel, the story does not feel like a filler book. The plot moves the story along, answering questions raised in the first book, but leaving readers with more than enough questions and loose ends for the final book in the trilogy, Ascend.

Brandi Nocturne Romance Reads

Torn is the stunning follow up to Switched. There are gasping moments as Ms. Hocking throws readers some twist and turns that makes Torn intriguing and genuine. Wendy is trying to understand what this new life entails. Her character has grown even more and with her duties and struggles, she becomes quite the strong heroine. Some secrets will be revealed and her romantic struggles only deepen. Amanda Hocking surpasses all expectations with Torn.
