Overview
The film A Bridge Too Far introduced the Battle of Arnhem to a world-wide audience, and since then this tragic airborne operation has taken its proper place among the most dramatic events in military history. It was intended that Allied airborne divisions would capture a series of bridges behind German lines and be joined by rapidly advancing ground forces, thus greatly shortening the war. The U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions landed within reach of supporting armored units, but the British 1st Airborne Division drew the assignment of landing at Arnhem, the "bridge too far" behind German lines. Quickly surrounded by two SS panzer divisions whose presence had been missed by Allied reconnaissance, the British paratroopers were defeated after one of military history's greatest "last stands."
Today thousands visit the Arnhem area. Arnhem veteran John Waddy has produced a detailed guide, heavily illustrated with maps and photographs, that will greatly aid visitors and will be of enormous value to anyone studying the battle.
