Criticas

These eye-catching titles from Lerner's Culture Crafts series provide clear step-by-step illustrated instructions and patterns for making appealing Latino crafts. Brief information on the history and significance of the art forms, accompanied by a small map showing each craft's geographical origin, enhances their value for librarians, teachers, and parents. The first title includes instructions for Guatemalan worry dolls, cuna molas (pictures stitched on cloth), and a tree of life; the Caribbean title gives directions for Cuban yarn dolls, Jamaican woven fish, Barbadian shell crafts, and more. Because the projects are easy enough for children to make without a lot of adult help, elementary and middle school and public libraries will find these valuable additions to their collections. The Caribbean volume is a unique resource for projects found in few other titles.

Children's Literature

Tired of making the same old crafts with your church group? Looking for some fresh ideas to use with your scouts? Then this book may help you out. Jamaican woven fish, Grenadian spice hangers and Cuban yarn dolls are just a few of the unique projects described in this book. Each Caribbean craft project starts with a complete listing of materials needed and has simple, step-by-step instructions. Bright, colorful pictures accompany each page for a clear understanding of style and technique. Most projects can be completed in four or five steps. Also included is a "what else you can do section" that offers additional ideas or a new twist for each island craft. 2001, Lerner Publications, $23.93. Ages 7 to 10. Reviewer: Sharon Tolle

School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Temko provides background information on the technique and the significance of the eight crafts explored in each of these titles. Her clear and consistent, step-by-step directions are easy to follow and the required materials are easily obtainable. Where applicable, caution notes are given and adult help is indicated. The illustrative material includes photos, drawings, labeled diagrams, and simple color maps. Unfortunately, the map of Japan shows the Atlantic rather than the Pacific Ocean. Despite this, these titles are useful supplements to the "World Crafts" series (Watts), the "Worldwide Crafts" series (Gareth Stevens), and "Country Topics for Craft Projects" series (Watts), as well as Alexandra Terzian's The Kids' Multicultural Art Book (Williamson, 1993). Besides discovering enjoyable craft activities in Temko's titles, readers will gain some knowledge of these cultures.-Augusta R.
