Synopsis
Texas Jack, the jackrabbit, sez that after the Civil War, millions of wild Longhorn cattle roamed the plains of Texas. In order for the cowboys to sell the cattle, though, they had to round up herds of up to 5,000 head of cattle and move them to markets 1,000 miles to the North. This is what they called a "Trail Drive".
Children's Literature
The many hardships and dangers of driving a herd of cattle from the brush country of South Texas to the cattle markets of Kansas, in the years following the Civil War, are depicted in this picture book using a brief factual text and humorous color illustrations. The straightforward account of the cowboy's work is somewhat enlivened by the comments of Texas Jack, an anthropomorphic jackrabbit who appears on every page with a comment expressed in an exaggerated Texas drawl.
