Library Journal

Toomer holds a master's degree in forestry and is curator of the National Arboretum, Westonbirt, England. For this A-to-Z directory, he has chosen more than 80 small trees-almost all 33 inches or fewer at maturity-that are suitable for small, temperate gardens. He begins with a brief introduction to siting, selecting, planting, and caring for trees, followed by the directory, which is arranged by scientific name. Each entry describes the tree and its features, emphasizing those of special interest: exfoliating bark, flowers, and so on. Toomer also notes the best site for the tree, how to care for it, and similar trees and suggested cultivars. A box in each entry shows at a glance mature height, U.S.D.A. hardiness zones, sun/shade tolerance, soil types, soil pH, and country of origin. Clear color photographs illustrate different aspects of the tree, from the entire tree to those features that distinguish it, such as bark, flowers, berries, leaf shape, or fall color. The final section, "Tree Selector," helps gardeners choose trees based on specific features or uses, including flowers, fruit/cones, foliage, fall color, bark, and winter interest. This attractive, useful guide is recommended for most public and horticulture libraries.-Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
