Overview

Kelly Jacobs has already paid the ultimate price of loving a warrior; she has the folded flag and the grateful thanks of a nation to prove it. Navy SEAL Joe “Bear” Baker can't ask her to accept that risk again—even though he loves her. But the man responsible for her husband's death is back; closer than either of them realize. Kelly is in danger, and Joe may not get there in time.

Uncommon Heroes: Welcome to a world where friendships go deep, loyalties stand strong, and uncommon heroes perform the toughest jobs in the world. Dee Henderson's military romance series provides a detailed passage into the world of the military and homeland heroes, and those they love. Tyndale House Publishers

Synopsis

Kelly Jacobs watched with pride as her husband, Nick, triumphed in his demanding SEALs military training. When he dies on a mission three years later, she is wounded to the soul-yet copes with the determination of a SEAL's wife; bracing herself to keep going despite the loss. In return, Nick's comrades watch over Kelly as part of their family. Joe Baker had been leading the team when Nick was killed. He takes the loss especially hard: Nick had led him to Christ and was his best friend. When Nick dies, Joe suffers survivor's guilt. He takes care of Kelly and plans to find her a new husband. He figures he owes her that-he just hadn't counted on falling in love with her. As Kelly struggles to move on and Joe is torn between loyalty to Nick and love for Kelly, God provides surprising answers to their dilemmas and reveals the beauty of the truth that "a friend loves at all times."

Library Journal

Henderson burst onto the romance scene with her "O'Malley" series (beginning with The Negotiator, LJ 2/1/00). Not content to work on one series at a time, she here dives into Navy SEAL territory. As lifeguard Kelly Jacobs risks her life to save a drowning teen, her memory slips back to her late husband and her friendship with Lt. Joe "Bear" Baker of the SEALs. She also remembers her husband's death in a "training accident," which leads her to consider her own mortality. Desperately, she calls on God and pledges to tell Joe her feelings if she survives. When he pulls her out of the water and hears "I love you," his heart skips a beat because he feels the same way. Kelly and Joe turn to God to help them muddle through Kelly's fear of loving another man in a dangerous profession. But God has a few tests about forgiveness in store when the man responsible for the death of Kelly's husband shows up and threatens both their lives. Fans of Suzanne Brockman's "SEAL" series will latch onto this. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\
