School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-These books use photographs of real people to exemplify these traits. Doak suggests different ways of showing concern and compassion for others, giving the example of an 11-year-old's baseball teammates shaving their heads when he began losing his hair because of cancer treatment. Dylan discusses respect for self, women, the environment, authority, property, and in competition. Lauren discusses honesty, keeping promises, and fair play, and uses Rudolph Giuliani as an example of a trustworthy leader. All three books include lots of different scenarios, making them powerful tools to use to explain these characteristics to children. The typeface is large, and at least one full-color photo appears on each topical spread. Assets to any character-building unit.-Gina Powell, Hidenwood Elementary School, Newport News, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
