Overview

This book contains peer-reviewed contributions presented at the 9th Meeting of the International Study Group of Tryptophan Research (ISTRY) held in Hamburg, October 1998. It provides a unique survey of the progress in tryptophan research and covers the research areas of psychiatry, neurology, pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, biochemistry, chemistry, food science and analytical chemistry. The proceedings include contributions on basic research topics and clinical, nutritional or industrial applications. The book summarizes advances in the understanding of basic aspects of tryptophan metabolism and the role of many different tryptophan derivatives under physiological and pathological conditions as modulators of, e.g., nervous, immune, endocrine and metabolic regulation. Possible applications such as the therapeutic perspectives of tryptophan, 5-hydroxytryptophan and melatonin in medicine, their use as food supplements or animal feed, and the application of novel analytical methods in tryptophan research are described.

Incl. 120+ presentations on basic rsrch; clinical, nutritional & industrial applications; etc

From an October 1998 international gathering in Hamburg, 106 papers focus on the role of tryptophan, of tryptophan metabolites<-- >especially serotonin and melatonin<-->with regard to brain function in health and disease. They pivot on the general themes of psychiatry, neurology, pharmacology, medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, toxicology, immunology, biochemistry, agricultural and food studies, and analytical chemistry. Among the topics most discussed are the regulation of the formation and the release of melatonin, its normal physiological functions, alterations of its production in certain diseases, its possible actions as a radical scavenger, and therefore its possible therapeutic potential; the Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome caused by the intake of contaminated tryptophan preparations and the consequence of the disaster for quality management in manufacturing tryptophan; and the interactions of tryptophan and its various metabolites with immune responses.
