From The Critics
Reviewer: Joseph R. Lentino, M.D.,Ph.D(Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine)Description: "This comprehensive review of these infections covers epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and public health aspects of tuberculosis in the first section. The second section is devoted to all the clinical manifestations that have been known to occur with TB, ranging from the rare such as otologic, to the common such as vertebral osteomyelitis. This section also covers TB in special populations such as infants and children and HIV infected patients. The third and final section of the book deals exclusively with nontuberculous mycobacterial infections. "
Purpose: The book serves as a ready reference for anyone in medicine, nursing, public health or policy making with an interest in TB. The editor, a professor of medicine and director of the Tuberculosis Control Program at the Philadelphia Department of Health, is internationally known for his work in this field.
Audience: The intended audience is both clinical healthcare providers as well as public health professionals whose daily work puts them in contact with populations at risk for TB.
Features: The book has excellent figures and graphs throughout. Although they are entirely in black and white and some of the photomicrographs lose their impact, this does not detract from their utility. Each chapter has been written in a very concise yet understandable format with extensive and current references.
Assessment: This is as excellent book for medical students with an interest in TB as well as for established clinicians who see TB patients in their practice. Public health students will find much useful information as well.
