Description: This is a comprehensive review of the clinical, public health, and basic science aspects of tuberculosis. The first edition was published in 1996.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a complete book on the topic by assembling chapters by leading authorities on every aspect of the disease. The second edition includes much needed updates on the changing epidemiology, basic research discoveries, and treatment options for resistant tuberculosis. These are worthy objectives and well met in this edition.
Audience: This book will serve as an excellent reference for both basic scientists and clinicians, including residents and fellows with a special interest in TB, and pulmonary, public health, and infectious disease specialists. The editors are leading authorities on this disease and have compiled an impressive group of authors to review each aspect of the disease.
Features: The book covers all aspects of the disease, including epidemiology, genomics and microbiology, the entire clinical spectrum, therapy and prevention. New to this edition are chapters reviewing directly observed therapy especially in relation to multidrug resistant TB, the newly sequenced genome of M. tuberculosis, updates on recent research pertaining to mechanisms of disease and the host response and discussion of current and future public health issues. The best aspects of this book are the extensiveness of the review and the new discussions related to treatment and epidemiology in light of emerging resistance and HIV disease. As with any book that attempts to cover basic science information, new data emerges quickly, making even new editions somewhat outdated.
