Who among us hasn't at one time or another driven over a bridge or through a tunnel and wonderedβhow in the world was this built? Now there is a book that gives both adults and kids, (the ones who usually ask the questions) some answers, in language fourth graders on up will comprehend. This is another well-written book in the educational series entitled, "A True Book." Much of the credit this time goes to the author, a seasoned writer not just for this series but a variety of nonfiction books providing detailed information that engages the interest of older children. The large, clear print sometimes fills whole pages, but at least one excellent photograph accompanies each page of text. The emphasis in these photos is not only on the plans and equipment needed, but also on the people who worked so hard, sometimes sacrificing their lives, to build access to areas that up to that point had been off limits to people. An obvious school library addition, and a budding construction buff might just want this one on his/her bookshelf at home. 2001, Children's Press, $22.00. Ages 9 up.
