School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-- A well-conceived series that introduces children to engineering and construction practices. The information is well organized and is presented concisely in nontechnical language. Each book has a historical overview of the topic, information on how to plan and execute construction of the structures, and science experiments relating to various stages of the project. New terms are highlighted throughout, and a complete glossary appears at books' end. Each is heavily illustrated with full-color photographs and drawings that set off and emphasize the texts, creating an appealing synergistic whole that will excite readers. Jeremy Kingston's How Oil Rigs Are Made and Michael Lynch's How Bridges Are Made (both Facts on File, 1986) are for slightly older readers. Students interested in overviews of these subjects for reports and general reading will want to seek out the ``How We Build'' series first. --Susan Penny, St. Cecilia School, Houston
