During WWII the US produced war plans for every major campaign. The actual course of the war was, however, often very different. Coalition politics, enemy reactions, and logistical problems frequently forced commanders to modify plans. This volume contains many of the actual plans the US meant to use. There are two parts: first, the US War plans from 1939-45, and second, a series of 35 documents including the Rainbow documents (nos. 1 & 4 for the defense of North America and the Western Hemisphere, respectively), American-Dutch-British conversations on Japanese strategy, the Avalanche Plan, Operation Detachment for Iwo Jima, and Operation Iceberg for Okinawa.
