Synopsis

Describes pysanky, the traditional folk craft of decorating Easter eggs as carried on by women in Ukraine, a country on the northern edge of the Black Sea.

School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-This photo-essay is as much about the history of Ukrainian Easter tradition and superstition as it is about the craft of creating the gorgeously patterned eggs known as pysanky and lesser known krashanky. While one page shows a young woman writing on an egg with a kistka and making a delicate design, the two-page craft instructions given at the end seem as much for an ordinary hard-boiled Easter egg with a simple, rather crude design using crayon and food color. Words that appear in the glossary appear in boldface in the text next to their phonetic pronunciation in parentheses. Why this is done for ordinary, simple words rather than just for the few foreign words is mystifying and distracts from the flow of the text. Suitable for an introduction to the Easter-egg traditions of the Ukrainians, but lacking as a fine craft book.-Marcia W. Posner, Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center of Nassau County, Glen Cove, NY
